A 6-night and 7-day itinerary is the perfect duration to cover these three gems. Typically, travelers spend 1 night in Mysore to witness its royal architecture, followed by 2 nights in Coorg for coffee plantations, and 3 nights in Ooty (including a day trip to Coonoor) to enjoy the Nilgiri hills. This pace ensures you aren't spending your entire holiday just sitting in a car.
For the most efficient route, it is best to arrive at Bangalore (BLR) or Mangalore (IXE) airport. Starting from Mangalore or Bangalore allows you to reach Coorg or Mysore easily. For your return, Coimbatore (CJB) airport is the most convenient exit point, as it is only about 3 hours away from Ooty, saving you a long drive back to your starting point.
The crown jewel is the Mysore Palace, especially when illuminated on Sundays or public holidays. Other essentials include the Chamundi Hill Temple for a panoramic view of the city, the St. Philomena's Cathedral, and the musical fountain show at Brindavan Gardens. If you’re traveling with kids, the Mysore Zoo is one of the best-maintained in India.
Known as the "Scotland of India," Coorg is famous for its sprawling coffee estates and misty weather. Key highlights include the Dubare Elephant Camp, where you can watch elephants bathe, the stunning Abbey Falls, and the Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple) in Bylakuppe. It offers a much more rugged, nature-focused experience compared to the manicured gardens of Ooty.
Yes! The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a highlight of the Ooty leg. The most popular stretch is between Ooty and Coonoor. It is highly recommended to book your tickets well in advance via the IRCTC website, as the heritage train has limited seating and high demand from tourists year-round.
The drive from Coorg to Ooty takes approximately 6 to 7 hours. While the roads are generally in good condition, the route involves several hairpin bends as you ascend into the Nilgiris. A major highlight of this drive is passing through the Bandipur or Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, where you can often spot deer, peacocks, and occasionally wild elephants.
The best time is from October to June. The winter months (October to February) are chilly and pleasant, perfect for sightseeing. The summer months (March to June) provide a great escape from the heat of the Indian plains. While the monsoons (July to September) turn the region into a lush green paradise, heavy rains can sometimes cause road delays in hilly terrain.
In Mysore, the top picks are Mysore Silk sarees, sandalwood oil, and the famous "Mysore Pak" sweet. In Coorg, travelers usually stock up on premium coffee beans, black pepper, and homemade chocolates. Both regions are also great for buying authentic South Indian spices and locally crafted wooden artifacts to take home as souvenirs.
This circuit caters to all budgets. You can find everything from pocket-friendly guesthouses and homestays in Coorg to ultra-luxury heritage hotels in Mysore. Since the destinations are relatively close to each other, fuel costs are manageable. To save money, consider traveling in a group and booking a dedicated cab for the entire 7-day circuit.
While you don't need a special permit to drive through the national parks (like Bandipur) on your way to Ooty, there are strict timings (usually 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM). Night driving is prohibited through the tiger reserves. If you wish to go on a forest safari, those must be booked separately at the forest department counters or online.
You will experience a wonderful variety of South Indian flavors. Mysore is famous for its traditional thalis and breakfast items like Mysore Masala Dosa. Coorg offers unique Kodava cuisine, known for its spicy flavors and bamboo shoot dishes. Ooty, being a popular hill station, offers everything from warm street-side corn to high-end multi-cuisine restaurants.
Absolutely. This is one of India’s most romantic routes. Many couples choose private plantation stays in Coorg for privacy and cozy evenings by the fireplace in Ooty. The combination of royal luxury in Mysore and the scenic landscapes of the Western Ghats provides a perfect backdrop for a memorable honeymoon or anniversary trip.
