Frequently Asked Questions

1. When is the best time to visit Chardham?

The best time for the Chardham Yatra is from May to June and September to October. During these months, the weather is pleasant and ideal for trekking. It is highly recommended to avoid the monsoon season (July and August) due to the high risk of heavy rainfall, landslides, and road blockages in the mountainous terrain.

Yes, biometric registration is mandatory for every pilgrim visiting the Chardham shrines. You can register online through the official Uttarakhand Tourism website or via the Tourist Care Uttarakhand mobile app. After registration, you will receive a Yatra Registration Letter with a QR code, which is checked at various points during your journey.

A standard Chardham Yatra tour package by road usually takes 10 to 12 days starting from Delhi, Haridwar, or Rishikesh. This duration allows for travel, rest, and darshan at each temple. If you are short on time, you can opt for Chardham by Helicopter, which can be completed in just 5 to 6 days.

According to Hindu tradition, the yatra should be performed from West to East. The correct order is Yamunotri (dedicated to Goddess Yamuna), followed by Gangotri (dedicated to Goddess Ganga), then Kedarnath (Lord Shiva), and finally Badrinath (Lord Vishnu). This sequence is followed to respect the geographical flow of the holy rivers and shrines.

The trek to Kedarnath temple is approximately 16 to 18 km from Gaurikund. It is considered moderately difficult due to the steep incline and high altitude. While many pilgrims walk, those with physical limitations can hire ponies, palkis (palanquins), or pitthus (porters). Alternatively, helicopter services are available from Phata, Sirsi, and Guptkashi.

Helicopter bookings for Kedarnath are handled exclusively through the IRCTC Heli Yatra official website. Tickets usually open for booking a few weeks before the yatra begins. Ensure you have your Yatra Registration Number ready, as it is required to book your slots. Be cautious of fraudulent websites claiming to sell cheap helicopter tickets.

Even in summer, temperatures in the Himalayas can drop significantly at night. Pack heavy woolens, thermal wear, and a windcheater. Since the weather is unpredictable, always carry a sturdy raincoat or umbrella. Comfortable trekking shoes with a good grip are essential for the Yamunotri and Kedarnath stretches. Don’t forget basic medicines for altitude sickness, fever, and pain relief.

While there is no official age limit, the Chardham Yatra involves high altitudes (above 10,000 ft) and strenuous trekking. Senior citizens and individuals with respiratory or heart conditions should consult a doctor before traveling. It is advisable to undergo a medical check-up, and the government often sets up health screening camps at the starting points of the treks.

Yes, there are various accommodation options ranging from basic Dharamshalas and GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) guesthouses to mid-range private hotels. However, during peak season (May-June), hotels fill up quickly. It is highly recommended to book your stay well in advance to avoid last-minute hassles and inflated prices in remote areas like Kedarnath.

The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, which is well-connected to major Indian cities like Delhi and Mumbai. For those traveling by train, Haridwar and Rishikesh are the most convenient railway stations. From these points, you can easily hire private taxis or take state-run buses to begin your mountain journey.

Mobile network coverage has improved significantly, but it remains patchy in high-altitude areas. BSNL, Airtel, and Jio generally work best in the main towns like Uttarkashi, Guptkashi, and Joshimath. However, you may lose signals during the actual treks or in deep valleys. It is wise to inform your family beforehand about potential connectivity issues.
