Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the best time to visit Sikkim and Darjeeling?

The ideal time for a Sikkim Darjeeling trip is from March to May (spring/summer) and October to mid-December (autumn). During spring, you can witness the vibrant rhododendron blooms, while autumn offers crystal-clear views of the Kanchenjunga range. It is best to avoid the monsoon months of July to September, as heavy rainfall often leads to landslides and road blockages in the hills.

To cover the major highlights of Gangtok, Pelling, and Darjeeling, a 7 to 8-day itinerary is recommended. Typically, travelers spend 3 nights in Gangtok for local sightseeing and Tsomgo Lake, 2 nights in Pelling to explore the skywalk and waterfalls, and 2 nights in Darjeeling for the iconic Tiger Hill sunrise and lush tea gardens.

While Indian nationals do not need a permit to enter the general areas of Sikkim like Gangtok or Pelling, a Protected Area Permit (PAP) is mandatory for restricted zones. These include Nathula Pass, Tsomgo Lake, and North Sikkim destinations like Lachung. Your travel agent can easily arrange these permits using your Aadhaar card or Voter ID and passport-sized photographs.

The most convenient way to reach the region is via Bagdogra International Airport (IXB) or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP). Both serve as the primary gateways for travelers heading to Gangtok, Pelling, or Darjeeling. From Bagdogra or NJP, you can hire a private taxi or take a shared cab. The drive to Gangtok usually takes about 4.5 to 5 hours.

Pelling is famous for its breathtaking views of Mt. Kanchenjunga. Must-visit attractions include the Pelling Skywalk (India’s first glass skywalk) and the Chenrezig Statue. Don't miss the historic Rabdentse Ruins, the serene Pemayangtse Monastery, and the majestic Kanchenjunga Waterfalls. Pelling offers a much quieter and more nature-focused experience compared to the bustling town of Gangtok.

No, Nathula Pass is closed to tourists on Mondays and Tuesdays for maintenance. Access to the pass is also subject to weather conditions and the availability of permits. Since there is a daily limit on the number of vehicles allowed, it is advisable to apply for your permit at least one day in advance through a registered Sikkim travel agent.

Both towns offer unique experiences. Gangtok is the modern hub of Sikkim, known for its clean MG Marg, vibrant cafes, and high-altitude lake excursions. Darjeeling is famous for its colonial charm, the UNESCO World Heritage Toy Train, and expansive tea estates. Most Indian travelers prefer a combined trip to enjoy the cultural variety and scenic beauty of both hill stations.

Even in summer, temperatures in Gangtok and Pelling remain cool, so carry light woolens or jackets. If you are visiting Tsomgo Lake or North Sikkim, you will need heavy winter wear as these areas are significantly colder. For winter trips (December to February), thermal innerwear and heavy down jackets are essential to handle the sub-zero temperatures and potential snowfall.

Since Tsomgo Lake and Nathula Pass are located above 12,000 feet, some travelers may experience Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS). It is important to stay hydrated and avoid overexertion. If you have heart or respiratory issues, consult a doctor before traveling. Carrying small oxygen cylinders and medications for motion sickness is also a good practice for the winding mountain roads.

In Gangtok, head to MG Marg for Tibetan handicrafts, woolens, and prayer flags. Darjeeling is the best place to buy authentic, world-renowned Darjeeling Tea directly from the estates. Other popular souvenirs include traditional Lepcha weaves, hand-painted Thangka scrolls, and local spices like large cardamom, which is grown extensively across the hills of Sikkim.

Yes, Sikkim is consistently ranked as one of the safest states in India for tourists. The locals are hospitable, and the crime rate is very low. However, because permits for restricted areas like Nathula Pass are often issued for groups, solo travelers may need to join a shared tour or coordinate with a travel agency to process the necessary documentation.

No, a day trip to Yumthang Valley or Zero Point is not possible from Gangtok due to the long distance and difficult terrain. You must travel to Lachung first, stay overnight, and visit the valley the following morning. This requires a separate 2-night/3-day tour package dedicated specifically to North Sikkim, which is a highlight for many travelers.
