Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do Indians need a visa for a Sri Lanka trip in 2026?

As of early 2026, Sri Lanka offers visa-free entry for Indian passport holders for tourism purposes. You are typically granted a 30-day stay on arrival. However, it is mandatory to apply for a free Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) through the official government portal before you fly. Ensure your passport has at least six months of validity from your date of entry.

The ideal time for this circuit is between December and April. During these months, the west and south coasts, including the beaches of Bentota, enjoy dry, sunny weather. The Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya and Dambulla) is also pleasant for climbing and sightseeing. If you plan to visit in July or August, you can witness the famous Esala Perahera festival in Kandy.

A 6 to 7-day trip is perfect for covering these highlights. We recommend spending 2 days in the Sigiriya/Dambulla area for history, 2 days in the lush hills of Kandy, and at least 2 days relaxing on the golden sands of Bentota. This allows for a balanced mix of adventure, culture, and coastal relaxation without feeling rushed.

Yes, Indian travelers will find plenty of familiar options. Sri Lankan cuisine shares similarities with South Indian food, featuring rice, Dhal (Lentils), and Pol Sambol. Most hotels in Kandy and Bentota serve "Pure Veg" Indian meals or Jain options upon request. Popular local vegetarian dishes like Kottu Roti and String Hoppers are must-tries for every foodie.

While you cannot use Indian Rupees (INR) directly for local purchases, many tourist spots and large hotels now accept UPI payments, which is a huge convenience for Indians. For smaller shops in Dambulla or local markets in Kandy, it is best to carry Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR). You can easily exchange USD or INR at the Colombo airport or local banks.

The most comfortable way to travel between Kandy and Bentota is by private car or taxi, which takes about 4–5 hours. For a more scenic experience, many travelers take the train from Kandy to Colombo and then catch a coastal train to Bentota. This route offers stunning views of the Indian Ocean as you approach the southern beaches.

Sri Lankan temples, like the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy and the Dambulla Cave Temple, have strict dress codes. Both men and women must cover their shoulders and knees. It is advisable to carry a light sarong or shawl. Since you will need to remove your shoes, wearing socks can protect your feet from the hot stone floors during the afternoon.

Climbing the Sigiriya Lion Rock involves roughly 1,200 steps. While it is safe and well-maintained, it can be strenuous for seniors or very young children in the heat. We suggest starting the climb by 7:30 AM to avoid the midday sun. For those with mobility issues, the nearby Pidurangala Rock offers a great view of Sigiriya with a slightly shorter (though steeper) trek.

Bentota is the water sports capital of Sri Lanka. Indian travelers love the Madhu River Safari, where you can explore mangrove forests. For thrill-seekers, the Bentota lagoon offers jet-skiing, banana boat rides, and para-sailing. If you are visiting between November and April, you can also enjoy snorkeling or scuba diving in the nearby clear waters.

Yes, there are frequent direct flights to Colombo (BIA) from major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Airlines such as SriLankan Airlines, Air India, and Indigo operate daily. Once you land in Colombo, Sigiriya is approximately a 4-hour drive, making it a convenient starting point for your Sri Lankan adventure.

Kandy is famous for its Gem Museums, where you can buy authentic Sri Lankan blue sapphires and traditional batik fabrics. Don't forget to buy high-quality Ceylon Tea from the local plantations. In Bentota and the surrounding coastal areas, look for intricate wood carvings and Ayurvedic herbal products, which make for excellent souvenirs to bring back home.

Compared to other international destinations, Sri Lanka is very budget-friendly for Indians. The cost of food, local transport (like Tuk-Tuks), and entry fees is reasonable. By booking a customized tour package that includes Sigiriya, Kandy, and Bentota, you can manage your expenses effectively while enjoying high-quality 4-star or 5-star accommodations at prices lower than in India.
